Inland Trading Block Villages

(with State Customs Tax Seals)

The Monastery (Nunnery) at Goritsy Village on the White Lake.

The Bolsheviks subsequently killed all the nuns living in the Goritsy monastery

but some other devoted nuns returned in the 1990's to carry on the work.

There was a trade fair in Goritsy Village eight times a year in peace time which had an annual turnover of one million roubles ...and the largest item in the bazaar trade was long fibred flax at 85,000 puds .. One pud (pood) was equal to 36.1 pounds or 16.39 kilograms in 1545–55.

The Russian pud came from the Low German or Old Norse pund  or pound weight.  That was 3,068,500 kg of raw flax fibre, 3000 tons a year, with 5,000 puds of edible flax seed & 300 puds of linseed oil, plus large quantities of fur products ... hare skins and sheep skins.

Whereas these seals are probably associated with the flax trade the lack of quality marks would suggest that the seals were used to identify flax internally in Russia and were sent to the trade ports for export to be given other quality seals there ... or .. they were bag seals for Flax Seed. Also the Kobel'kov family in Selo Goritsy and the Dudin family in Dunilovo were heavily involved in the fur and pelt trade and these seals could be for the fur trade, including hare skin and sheep skin fur coats and hats, feathers and down, horse hair, ox & cow horns & bones, wool, bear skins. T.I Dunin claims to have "головкa" (head) the best fur, "шкурки" - "animal skins" .. (as H (head) would mean best flax). The English established companies at Kolmogorod (Archangel), Novgorod, Vologda & Moscow.

Goods were transported to the coastal ports for shipment overseas in small shallow draught boats.

The Ivanovo Trading Block was created by merging the old flax-processing villages of Dunilovo with the Goritsy Monastery in the 17th–18th centuries. The seals from this merger with the then Ivanovo-Voznesensk bear the inscriptions Selo Goritsy, Dunilovo, Pshenichnovo, Zaichina, Pavlovo, Pistsovo, Shuya and others..    Ivanovo-Voznesensk was the home to the first labour union in Russia called "Nevestka" (bride) because of the high percentage of women workers, which was normal in the flax industry.   The town was renamed Ivanovo in 1932 and was nicknamed Red Manchester because of the many textile manufacturers in the region. . These villages also had an extensive fur trade in coats, hats, hare pelts and sheep skins.

Inspectors/Owners from  Inland Villages (Selos)
Traders in Flax products, Furs and Pelts.

Note some of these names are not in the main database as they are not "Baltic Port" inspectors.

All of the seals in Farnham Museum are Inland Traders seals .. there are no flax or hemp seals.
Villages shown from seals in the list as Lunidovo, Dudilovo are casting errors of Dunilovo.

History of the Lokalov's.  A flax dealer from the village of Great Yaroslavl region, a merchant of the I guild, Alexey Lokalov, created a small factory of hand weaving on the ten tithes of land 7 miles from the village of the Great at the village of Gavrilov-Yam.  In the early 1960s. In the 19th century, Lokalov's handout office employed 42 of its own mills and up to 800 mills worked for a novice factory worker in peasant lights. In addition, he installed hand machines, organized a small factory. In 1871 A.V. Lokalov applied to the Yaroslavl board for the construction of a mechanical flax mill in the village of Gavrilov-Yam. He chose Knopp and K from Belfast, England, as a supplier of equipment. On February 17, 1882, Lokalov's new factory released the first batch of products. He handed over his case to the reliable hands of his son Alexander Alekseevich, who managed not only to keep production at the proper level, but also made a huge contribution to its development and modernization. Also in 1882 Lokalov's factory received a gold medal at the Art and Industrial Exhibition in Moscow. By that time the factory employed 2,500 people. In 1884 the factory equipment consisted of two steam engines in 125 horsepower, 8,000 spindle, 340 looms and 3 holanders. This meant the advent of a new era, the beginning of mechanical production on a new basis finishing goods. In 1887 a Partnership was established between Aleksandr Lokalov and his daughter Elena Lokalova. In 1896 At the exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod, Lokalova's company was awarded the right to depict the state coat of arms on its products, becoming a supplier of the Imperial Court. In 1912 the locals sold the factory to the Ryabushinsky brothers. By that time, the company's main capital is 3 million rubles. For the high quality of products the company is awarded gold and silver awards at various exhibitions.  In 1917 with the advent of Soviet power, A.A. Lokalov's "Comrade of Gavrilov-Yaman' Linen Products" renamed "Dawn of Socialism" continued to preserve the traditions of its founders with undeniable leadership in the industry. In the 1930s the flax mill receives high marks for the quality of products at international exhibitions in New York, Berlin and Paris and in 1937, the Textile Industry Narcotics was awarded a large gold medal for the high quality, elegant and fine finish of linen fabrics. 1938 - The products of the "Dawn of Socialism" flax mill were recognized as a model, which all linen-finishing factories of the country had to follow.  In 1941 the main motto of the entire team of the flax mill was the slogan "The machines of the defenders of the Motherland should not stand for an hour!" in February 1944, 13 advancers of production for the successful performance of tasks on the equipment of the Red Army were awarded government awards. After the war, the flax mill completely switched to the production of tissues of wide consumption. The growth of output went through all the articles, and after the reconstruction of the plant in 1958-1978. output doubled.  In 2000 the Gavrilov-Yamsky flax mill was one of the largest textile companies in Russia. Historical experience and continuous improvement make it possible to produce products that meet modern quality requirements. The flax mill produced a range of linen and semi-casual costume and blouses, tablecloths, linen and fabrics, as well as finished items.  Unfortunately, in the late 2000s, the company faced a number of difficulties and financial shocks and was unable to overcome them. The result was a complete bankruptcy of the flax plant.
On the basis of the Gavrilov-Yamsky flax plant "Dawn of Socialism" a new-format enterprise - the Lokalov Technopark - has been created. This revived the great traditions and is a tribute the first Russian entrepreneurs! (With thanks to Vladimer Budko).

Although most inland seals are coming from Goritsy Village area and may be fur seals it is quite probable that seals from Siberia are definitely fur seals .. being identical to seals from Canada and Columbia ..  The Crown held aloft by two arms is atop the English Fishmonger's Company Crest (Stuart F Elton) who likely dealt in furs as well as fish.  The three sets of  numbers would seem to me to be dates ... 05-09-1811 and  (30)-12-1804  ... (possibly 1911/1904).

E G Artemov of the State Museum of Political History of Russia in St Petersburg has confirmed the transcription of

the Cyrillic characters as 'BASA GOSTORGA'. He translates this as 'the warehouse/storehouse of the Gostorg'.

The word  Gostorg is made up of parts of two Russian words: GOSudarstvenya, meaning 'state or government'

and TORGovlya  meaning 'trading company'.  (info from Paul Cannon)

The first ‘gostorgs’ were set up in the USSR [in Russian, CCCP] in April 1922.  Gostorgs were responsible

for the export of Soviet goods and the import of foreign goods into the Soviet Union.  The word Gostorg

is made up of parts of 2 Russian words: GOSudarstvenya, meaning 'state or government'  and  TORGovlya

meaning 'trading company'.  It is probable that this seal relates to Siberian goods because of the way the

Gostorg is described. Siberia in full = Сибирь.  The initials HKBT stand for the Russian  form of the

People’s Commissariat of Foreign Trade. (info from Paul Cannon)

During 1883-1915 the most important company in

Iceland was Norwegian Hans Ellefsen from Vestfold.

In 1889 he moved his company from Finnmark to

Önundarfjördur, increasing his 2 boats to 7 by 1901.

He established another station on the Mjöafjördur

on the east coast, and when his western station was

destroyed in a fire he moved all his operations to the

east at what became the biggest and most efficient

station in the North Atlantic.    Ellefsen went against

the practice of dumping the de-blubbered carcass at

sea and set up a guano factory.

The principal commodities for the export trade via St Petersburg were iron, copper, hemp, first, second and third sort flax, codilla, cordage, tallow and tallow candles, wax and wax candles, soap, potash, hemp seed oil, linseed oil, isinglass, tobacco leaves, horse hair, treacle, bristles, Muscovy leather, sole leather, tar, pitch, linen yarn, mats,  feathers and down, wool, caviar, tea, hops, horsetails, hare skins, Morocco bear skins, calve skins, deals, spars, quills, hats, ox and deer tongues, glass of different kinds, sailcloth, ravenduck, drillings, different kinds of napkin cloth, wheat, rye, linseed, flems, linen of different sorts, ox and cow horns and bones, and other lesser goods including potatoes..
