Inland Trading Block Villages (with State Customs Tax Seals)
The Monastery (Nunnery) at Goritsy Village on the White Lake.
The Bolsheviks subsequently killed
all the nuns living in the Goritsy monastery
but some other devoted nuns returned in the 1990's to
carry on the work.
|
There was a trade fair in Goritsy Village eight times a year in peace time which had an annual turnover of one million roubles ...and the largest item in the bazaar trade was long fibred flax at 85,000 puds .. One pud (pood) was equal to 36.1 pounds or 16.39 kilograms in 1545–55. The Russian pud came from the Low German or Old Norse pund or pound weight. That was 3,068,500 kg of raw flax fibre, 3000 tons a year, with 5,000 puds of edible flax seed & 300 puds of linseed oil, plus large quantities of fur products ... hare skins and sheep skins.
Whereas these seals are probably associated with the flax trade the lack of quality marks would suggest that the seals were used to identify flax internally in
Russia and were sent to the trade ports for export to be given other quality seals there ... or .. they were bag seals for Flax Seed. Also the Kobel'kov family in Selo Goritsy and the Dudin family in Dunilovo were heavily involved in the fur and pelt trade and these seals could be for the fur trade, including hare skin (Zaichina) and sheep skin fur coats and hats, feathers and down, horse hair, ox & cow horns & bones, wool, bear skins. T.I Dunin claims to have "головкa" (head) the best fur, "шкурки" - "animal skins" .. (as H (head) would mean best flax). The English established companies at Kolmogorod (Archangel), Novgorod, Vologda & Moscow.
Goods were transported to the coastal ports for shipment overseas in small shallow draught boats.
an extensive fur trade in coats, hats, hare pelts and sheep skins. The Ivanovo Trading Block was created by merging the old flax-processing villages of Dunilovo with the Goritsy Monastery in the 17th–18th centuries. The seals from this merger with the then Ivanovo-Voznesensk bear the inscriptions Selo Goritsy, Dunilovo, Pshenichnovo, Pavlovo, Pistsovo, Shuya and others.. Zaichina is a hare, fur skin) Ivanovo-Voznesensk was the home to the first labour union in Russia called "Nevestka" (bride) because of the high percentage of women workers, which was normal in the flax industry. The town was renamed Ivanovo in 1932 and was nicknamed Red Manchester because of the many textile manufacturers in the region. . These villages also had
Inspectors/Owners from Inland Villages (Selos) Note some of these names are not in the main database as they are not "Baltic Port" inspectors.
All of the seals in Farnham Museum are Inland Traders seals .. there are no flax or hemp seals. |

Icelandic Potash Seals
found
among
the Russian Selo Seals
by Mat Honeysett
During 1883-1915 the most important
company in
Iceland was Norwegian Hans Ellefsen from Vestfold.
In 1889 he moved his
company from Finnmark to
Önundarfjördur,
increasing his 2 boats to 7 by 1901.
He established another station on the Mjöafjördur
on
the east coast, and when his western
station was
destroyed
in a fire he moved
all his operations to the
east
at what became
the biggest and most efficient
station in
the North Atlantic.
Ellefsen
went against
the
practice of dumping the de-blubbered carcass at
sea
and set up a guano factory.
