Westhouse - Standard Seals
NP,  SPB, CПБ on the reverse of seals.

The purpose of this page. The vast bulk of seals found at Little Patrick Mill are the Standard Dated seals.
Letters NP,  SPB, CПБ on the reverse of seals can be used to help date them.
Up to 1828 all seals with NP are flax seals.
Up to 1828 all seals with SPB are hemp seals.
From 1829 there are no NP seals .. and SPB and CПБ were used for flax.
From 1829 hemp seals were a rarity with complicated designations.

LINKS TO WEST HOUSE COLLECTION

  Standard Dated Inspector Seals
found at West House Mill in North Yorkshire.

The letters NP, SPB, CПБ are on the reverse of the West House

seals, at the top, along with the date of inspection at the bottom.

NP and SPB were previously regarded as the ports of export, specifically as Non Provenance and St Petersburg, but in the light of new research, these letters can only be attributed to NP really being "State Tax, paid via Narva Port Customs House" .and SPB being "State Tax, paid via St Petersburg Customs House" There is proof of thousands of tons of flax being sent out of both Riga & St Petersburg under the letters NP, and from 1829 there were thousands of tons of  flax being sent out of Riga & St Petersburg under the letters SPB & CПБ.

For many decades in the 18th & 19th centuries, Russia was by far the world's greatest exporter of flax via the ports of Archangel, Konigsberg, Kronstadt, Libnau, Memel, Narva, Pernau, Reval, Riga, St Petersburg, Tilsit and Great Britain was Russia's major customer. All of these ports exported flax with seals stamped NP, (WK, WU,) SPB, (SP) and CПБ, and there is no certain way of saying which port exported any particular bale. However the seals on our database combined with the records of tons of flax shipped out of St. Petersburg and Riga in the same years prove that the letters NP, (WK, WU) all relate to flax bales up to 1828, whereas SPB are all related to hemp bales up to 1828, and after 1829 all the bale seals with SPB or CПБ refered to flax bales regardless of the port of shipping... meaning .. all of the flax bales coming out of St Petersburg up to 1828 were stamped NP .. not SPB ... NP being the State Tax code letters for flax shipped from the Baltic, regardless of the port of shipping.
